The Caged Virgin is Ali’s critical analysis of Islam, its treatment of women and the ways in which the religion keeps Muslim societies from moving forward. Using her own life examples, as well as those of other Muslim women, she examines how the threat of death and violence keep many enlightened Muslims from speaking out against the dark side of Islam and its brutal and oppressive aspects.

The book is written as a call to arms to put an end to Islam’s hostility towards women. She accuses the liberal West of viewing Islam through a veil of multiculturalism and thus helping those who use Islam to abuse and subject women. Ali shows how Western governments and enlightened Muslims can work to protect women from abuse and mistreatment and how critical analysis leads to real reform.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a Dutch feminist and politician born in Mogadishu, Somalia. Raised Muslim, Ali came to the Netherlands as a refugee in 1992. Now a member of the Dutch parliament, she fights for the rights of Muslim women in Europe. The Caged Virgin has become an international bestseller and Ali has won multiple accolades, including Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2005, Reader’s Digest European of the Year, the Danish Freedom Prize and the Swedish Democracy Prize among others.
