In The Foundation, Fleishman examines the elements of foundations in the United States, from their creation to the roles they now play in American society. He highlights their strengths and weaknesses, proposes reform, and provides a template for establishing foundations that want to make a large impact on improving the quality of life for their target beneficiaries.

Joel Fleishman is Professor of Law and Public Policy at Duke University. He has served as President of the Atlantic Philanthropic Service Company and was on the U.S. program staff of Atlantic Philanthropies. He currently serves as a trustee of the John and Mary Markle Foundation, Chairman of the Board of the Trustees of the Urban Institute, and Chairman of the Visiting Committee of the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.
