It’s Too Frightening for Me

Shirley Hughes was born and brought up near Liverpool. She studied at Liverpool Art School and the Ruskin School of Fine Art in Oxford. Since the 1950’s she has illustrated around two hundred books in both colour and line. When her family was young she started to write her own picture books, which include the much-loved Lucy and Tom series. She won the Kate Greenaway medal in 1977 and in 1984 was presented with the Eleanor Farjeon Award for distinguished services to children’s literature. She lives in West London with her architect husband, and has three grown-up children, two sons and a daughter, and five grandchildren who keep her on her toes.
