Prelude
The Letter
SOME PEOPLE TALK ABOUT VIOLENCE was created by Barrel Organ, in association with Camden People’s Theatre and Warwick Arts Centre.
What you find here is the text.
When Barrel Organ performed this piece, there was significant other material that worked with and against the text.
We have decided not to present it in the main body of this book, as you should feel that you can do whatever you want with the text, but details of this production can be found in the back.
So please, if you would like to perform the play, do whatever you want with the text.

THE GIRL
Female.
She often talks in extremes. This might lead you to play them with extreme emotion. Do not give into this. THE GIRL holds her feelings back, and she shouldn’t be revealing them until hard pushed (so, not until late in the play).
THE NARRATOR
Male/Female (Barrel Organ played as Male).
They are aggressive. They could be nice and charming, but they are still aggressive. They get what they want. They want to tell the story, even though it’s not theirs to tell.
THE MOTHER
Female.
She can be played more emotional than THE GIRL. More sympathetic than she lets on.
THE BROTHER
Male.
Can also be played more emotional than THE GIRL.
THE BOYFRIEND
Male.
Can be played by same performer as THE NARRATOR.
PERFORMANCE NOTES
The characters all talk very fast. Almost starting speaking before the last has finished. When they repeat themselves, or seem to get caught on a line, this is due to the speed of their thoughts, not due to hesitation.
