About the Author
Kris Bradley started on her path to witchcraft around the age of eight, with a spiral notebook full of facts about the Roman gods and goddesses copied from an encyclopedia. When she was twelve, she received her first deck of tarot cards from her sister, and she's never looked back. Author of the popular blog Confessions of a Pagan Soccer Mom, Kris is also a certified Reiki practitioner/teacher and ordained minister. Her interests include tarot, gardening, the magical history of food, crafting, cooking, paranormal investigations, and various forms of energy healing. Kris lives in New Jersey with her husband, three children, a dog, and three cats.

Acknowledgments
This book would not have been possible without the support and assistance of a multitude of people. Many thanks and much love to my husband and children who picked up slack and ate a lot of sandwiches while this book was being written. A huge thank-you to my parents for a childhood lost in books, sitting in trees, and open to a million possibilities. Thanks to my sister for buying me my first tarot deck when I was twelve, and to my brother who was more of an inspiration than he probably realizes. Much love to all of the members of the Monmouth County Broom & Brew. You ladies make me laugh, keep me sane(ish), and I am so blessed to have you in my life—you've earned your monkey wings, one and all!
I would never have been in the position to write this book if it weren't for everyone who reads Confessions of a Pagan Soccer Mom. Thanks for sharing all my mutterings and ramblings. And a special thanks to Nydia Macedo, the very first person to read and comment to the blog! If it hadn't been for you, I might have stopped there.
And thanks to the wonderful people at Weiser Books for holding the hand of a blogger writing her very first book. Your work, help, and tips were more than I could have hoped for.

CHAPTER 9
My Pipes are Clean!
Cleansing and Clearing
What comes first, cleansing or grounding? If you have not cleared yourself and your space, how can you ground? If you have not grounded, how can you effectively clear your space? They are the chicken and the egg, and you need to master them at the same time. A good grounding is very cleansing, and a good cleansing is very grounding. Together? They are amazing.
Cleansing and clearing is a must before any magical work, but within itself it is magical. I start every class with a cleansing, and everyone immediately feels different, and their magical work feels different, too. Just like when you bring your aura in, you are clearing the energy from other people, from your own issues, and from residual energy you pick up throughout the day. Too much energy on you or in the room in which you are working is like having three radios on all tuned to a different station. The energy can be confusing and distracting—even aggravating, and no one wants to cast an aggravating spell!
When you need to open the box of magic to solve a problem, you are probably in a bit of a panic. Panic spell casting is another bad plan. Whatever energy is predominating when you cast your spell is the energy that you will be getting in return. Making sure you are centered, calm, and clear will help guarantee that your spell manifests in a centered, calm, and clear way. Life is crazy enough; you don't want to buy an extended ride on the crazy train.
Keeping yourself clear during nonmagical times helps to strengthen your aura and helps in protection issues. Not to be paranoid, but negative energy gets thrown your way on a regular basis. (Paranoid yet?) When someone is jealous of you, is behind you in line at the grocery store, saw that you just lost ten pounds, likes your spouse, or is just in a pissy mood, they send those random acts of negative energy. That stuff can collect on your aura, and you don't want their ground-in stains on your aura. When stuff starts to collect, chaos happens; when chaos happens, you start to disempower yourself and get in a place where the drama of others can interfere. This is when you get more and more vulnerable to negative energy.
When you are centered and empowered, you just don't buy into as much drama, and it does not affect you. Negative energy never hits you where you are strong; it never uses frontal attack; it always goes for the weak spot. It is that weak spot where you are not totally clear or empowered, and that is where the negative energy will collect. It will try to match your vibration with its own and throw you off of your center. Clearing yourself regularly will stop that energy from building up and taking over.
There are many ways to cleanse and clear not only you, but your space as well. The first one that comes to mind for everyone is the sage smudge. Sage is a powerful, traditional cleansing tool. It raises your spiritual vibration and sends you into a place where you can connect more fully with your spirit guides and divinity.
Sage is great for spiritual work, but it is not as effective for the day-to-day energy. For day-to-day energy, peppermint, juniper, and rosemary are wonderful for clearing the lower vibration energy that can depress and irritate you. Frankincense is another great fragrance for cleansing—it will clear out an even higher level of your energy, spirits, and karmic energy, or prepare you for very high vibration work.
You can use tools or organic items, or you can use just your own energy. Visualization is the key to doing a cleansing in an energetic way. Ground your energy and look at your aura. Note how it looks to you and what needs to be adjusted. Visualize a white light waterfall that you put yourself in to clear away the gunk. You could also “shake and shimmy” your aura, shaking off the energy that is surrounding you. You can also pull up energy from the Earth and use it to push out the dissident energy that is in your energetic field.
You can cleanse with sound, too. Use a rattle, drum, or even a tuning fork to clear your energy. What sound does is vibrate your energy to a higher level, causing dissident energy to just fall off of you.

The egg is a living energy. Hooks are drawn into the energy and pulled into the egg. That is why you throw it away from your home—don't even look at when you are tossing it. What you cleanse from you, you want to remove from your life. Never look back, or you will invite the energy back into your life.
When you clear something or someone out of your life, don't talk about them for three days. Use another term or name that makes you laugh, otherwise you are calling to their energy and inviting them back into your life.
As you flip through the spell ingredients, you will find other herbs and crystals that work well for cleansing. Get inspired and make up your own cleansing recipe!
