Acknowledgments

I couldn't have written this book from my singular human perspective. To each of you who, over the years, has confided in me, trusted me, and shared your life, your love, your grief, and even the depths of your pain, this book is a tribute to what we have learned together.

Afterword

(But Not the Last Word)

Recently, during a trip to Scotland, I took a group on a journey of very sacred sites there. As we were standing in the midst of one of the stone circles, or henges, and I observed the individual experiences happening within the group members, I had a most profound revelation. After they had their private moments, the group encircled me, expecting to hear something wise and spiritual. What came out of my mouth was a surprise to everyone there, including me.

I would like to repeat it here, leaving you on this note:

Look around you. This is a place that is considered to be sacred. As each of you entered here, you felt that this place would do something for you or was giving something to you and that you could become something greater, fuller because of what you have received here. You began to feel the holiness here and therefore in yourselves.

You became reverent as soon as you walked through that gate. Many of you began to have spiritual experiences and felt your hearts expanding. I could feel you feeling the depths of your experiences.

But it isn't about this place. It is about you. Life is sacred. You are sacred.

What you are feeling is coming from within you. It is based upon your perceptions, your emotions, your hopes, wishes, and dreams. And you are only allowing yourselves to feel this in a place that you feel is appropriate or safe.

Let yourselves feel this in every moment of life. Feel deeply. Live fully.

I have a question for you. Don't answer it for me, or for us, just answer it for you.

The ancients left this place for people to come to for eons after they were here. They knew the importance of tradition and ritual, of what is sacred. What will you leave upon this earth when you are gone? What have you given in return for what you have received? Or are you all just taking what you can, while you can?

At this point, there was an audible gasp as the recognition of my words sank in. I was hitting home. Perfect. I continued:

Know that for every action there is a reaction, a rippling outward of consequences that continue on infinitely.

Know that every action you take, every word you speak, every thought you have, any energy of any kind that you expend affects the entirety. And you are affected by all that happens within the entirety. This is a mutual exchange that happens on the most minute and grandest levels of being.

Live intentionally. Know that you are always holy and whatever you choose in any given moment is the most perfect decision you could have ever made simply because you made it.

That you have the free will to determine the outcome of any situation in your life is a gift from the heavens that will never wear out.

Receiving and taking are two completely different animals. To take denotes possession. To receive denotes a gift. Let everything that you experience be a gift. Receive gracefully and with gratitude, and always, always be willing to do your part. You have to pray and move your feet.

And remember that all of your actions in all of your life leave an indelible mark upon this world and beyond.

To this I would only add: That indelible mark, everything that you create now, will be lived through our children and your children's children and their children and their children's children.

We have the power to change the world today, as well as our future world, through the actions and patterns, beliefs and perceptions that we hand down as our legacy. A life well lived makes us immortal. What we do, what we have done, will touch others in ways we cannot imagine. When we change ourselves, having the lives we want, knowing that all actions must be intentional because every one has a definite effect—we get what we create and we leave that for all others in our succession.

We must be vigilant.

First with ourselves.

Then all others.

As we are, we exercise the very power of the infinite right here on earth and fuel it for all time.
