HAT

 

Materials:

 

HIAWATHA Straw-Glo Art. 67, 4 tubes or Belastraw Art. 35, 2 tubes

Steel crochet hook No. 0

 

Gauge: 5 sc = 1"

 

TOP—Ch 4, sl st in 1st ch, forming a ring. Rnd 1—6 sc in ring. Mark beg of rnds. Rnd 2—2 sc in each st (6 incs). Inc 6 sc each rnd (not directly over incs of previous rnd) until piece is 4" across (66 sts). Work even to 4¼". Sl st in next st. Turn.

 

SIDES—Work from wrong side. Rnd 1—Through back loops only, work 2 sc in each st around. Rnd 2—* Draw up a loop in next st, holding yarn over forefinger as usual, insert middle finger in front of yarn and hold down behind work, insert hook in same st and draw up another loop, over and through 3 loops on hook—loop st made. Repeat from * around (132 loop sts). Rnd 3—Through both loops sc in each st around. Rnd 4—Through both loops work loop st in each sc around. Repeat rnds 3 and 4 until Side measures about 4" ending with loop st rnd. Next rnd—* Sc in each of next 4 sts, draw up a loop in each of next 2 sts, over and through all loops on hook—dec made. Repeat from * around (110 sc). Sl st in next st. Turn. Next rnd—Through back loops, sc in each st. Through both loops work 3 rnds sc dec to headsize. Sl st in next st. End off. Steam headband slightly.

BOTTOMInside—Ch 4, sl st in 1st ch, forming a ring. Rnd 1—6 sc in ring. Mark beg of rnds. Rnd 2—2 sc in each st (6 incs). Inc 6 sc each rnd (not directly over incs of previous rnd) until piece is 4" across (66 sts). Work even to 4¼". Sl st in next st. End off. Outside—Same as In­side but do not end off (be sure both pieces have same number of sts).

 

SIDESRnd 1—Working through back loops only of Outside and both loops of Inside, and inserting base, work * 2 sc in each of 3 sts, sc in next st. Repeat from * around, thus joining (116 sts). Sl st in next st. Turn. Rnd 2—* Draw up a loop in next st, holding yarn over forefinger as usual, insert middle finger in front of yarn and hold down behind work, insert hook in same st and draw up another loop, over and through 3 loops on hook—loop st made. Repeat from * around. Rnd 3—Sc in each st. Repeat rnds 2 and 3 until Side measures about 4¼" ending with loop st rnd.

 

Joining—Turn bag inside out. Divide top into 4 equal sections and mark with pins. Pick up bag top and hold upside down, with handles open. Working from right side, sl st in next st (working around uppermost wire) * ch 1, sl st in next st (around wire). Repeat from * across 27 sts, ch 2, skip 2 sts and continue around. Join and end off. Push bag through to right side.
