What’s it about?
When Arianna Huffington collapsed at her home office from exhaustion, it forced her to reassess her life and priorities. According to the traditional measures of success, power and money, Arianna was most definitely successful. But her experience made her question what success actually meant to her. Her soul-searching led her to define a new third metric of success: thriving.
Throughout the book, Arianna makes an impassioned plea for us all to take a closer look at our lives. Like the ancient Greeks, we must question what a good life means to us. If it means power and money, it is time to reassess our life just like Arianna did.
The book is full of wise anecdotes, stories from Arianna’s life and experiences, and sound, practical advice on how to lead a happy and successful life.
It is critical of the western definition of success, which has forged a culture of plenty, and has also forced us to work harder, with less time off and to ever-stricter deadlines. The result is stress and burnout. This cannot be success because it does not bring happiness.
It is only when we have achieved Arianna’s third metric that we can say that we have truly achieved success. This book provides valuable insights on why we need to aim to thrive and how we can achieve it.
