Preface
Many of you define success as working your way up the management ladder in your company or industry. It is a time-proven approach to personal achievement that brings financial security and a sense of accomplishing something significant. That process usually takes time and you are on your own in setting goals and knowing how to achieve them. One sure way to reach the success you want is to be more specific in your objectives then develop a plan to conquer those objectives. Easier said than done, of course.
This book outlines an approach that will make it faster and easier to achieve your success. The goal is to become a vice president (VP) in your organization or its equivalent. The VP level is right below that of President or CEO and is high enough to bring you the salary, perks, prestige and other benefits you desire. And if you achieve that goal it sets you up for some higher level experience that could lead you to the ultimate achievement to being the head honcho in your organization if you so choose.
With your main goal in place, you need a strategy to get there. This book lists several approaches you can take to achieve your goal. I used five of these to reach that goal several times in my career so I know they work. And I also outline some other strategies I have seen others use to reach the VP goal. The idea is to choose one method and give it a shot. If that does not work there are other avenues to pursue.
The book also includes a set of key tactics that will help get you there sooner. Many of these you may already know. However, you may discover some interesting new techniques that can speed up the process.
Becoming a VP was the way I achieved success in my work. It worked for me and I know it can work for you. I wish you the best of luck in reaching that objective.

Chapter 1
Why the VP Objective?
Several people have asked me over the years, why set the objective at becoming a VP, or its equivalent. Why not set the goal to becoming the CEO of a company? My answer is simple. There are many more opportunities for becoming a VP than for becoming a CEO. So, you are more likely to have the opportunity. Second, the requirements are broader and somewhat less restrictive than for becoming a CEO. As a result, your chances of “making it” are much higher.
When I first set this as my personal objective, I was several rungs lower on the management ladder. Becoming a VP was a real challenge but yet achievable. A VP level position raises you above the masses and into a position of power and perks. I thought I could do it.
There Are VPs and There Are VPs
