Darren West was the greatest athlete out there. At least, he was in the opinion of nineteen year-old Marcus Eeds. While other teenagers were idolizing the obscenely paid stars of basketball, baseball and football, Marcus had been following the career of twenty-three year-old West since he'd seen a news story on the then-high school sophomore who was offered a full scholarship to play soccer at Indiana University. It had been West who'd inspired Marcus, at the time just twelve-years-old, to join his school's soccer team.
As a nineteen year-old, West had been recruited to play for the US Men's Olympic team and helped lead them to a gold medal over Brazil. Both the Los Angeles Galaxy and D.C. United had been trying to recruit him and most people had seen the Olympics as the beginning of his professional career. However, instead of signing with one of the top teams in North America, he'd shocked the world by choosing to return to college and finish out his undergraduate degree in psychology. Shortly before graduation, he'd surprised everyone again by choosing the Colorado Rapids, whose recruiting had been overshadowed by the two other teams.
Now, just two years later, he was their star forward and they were on their way to the finals for the MLS Cup—and Marcus fully intended to be there. He'd been saving all year in anticipation and now had enough to pay for the tickets and the flight from Seattle to Houston. He didn't have enough to pay for a hotel room, but he didn't care about that. If it meant he could see West lead the Rapids to a win over the Galaxy, he'd gladly sleep in the airport.
When Marcus stepped out of the airport into the dry, relatively warm Texas air, he'd never been so excited. Everyone around him was bundled up for the late November weather, but Marcus hadn't bothered to bring a coat. Back home, they'd already gotten a thin layer of snow. For Houston, his long-sleeved cotton shirt was plenty warm enough and, judging by the admiring looks of several of the women passing by, he looked good in it, too. He had a good body and knew it. He was tall, with lean, defined muscles, and he was one of those guys who knew he looked just as good without clothes as he did with them. Add to that dark brown hair that always had that casually tousled look, dark green eyes and one of those pretty-boy faces, Marcus never lacked for female attention.
