“Run,” he said to her in that same infuriatingly calm voice. “Run faster than you ever have.”
Through the forest shadows they went, running like their life depended on it, and most likely it did. She had been beside Jemal in battle before. But always before, he had use of his magics. Without the wind to call on, he was reduced to being nothing more than a man.
…A man she had once depended on and shared her body with. Could he be those things again? She surprised herself with that thought as they hopped over thrusting tree roots. She meant could he be a man she depended on again. She wasn’t looking to be his lover again.
She shook her head angrily at herself. This was not the time from this.
A stone drop off loomed ahead of them and they leapt over the edge of it, falling to the slope of the hill again below. Ilaina could hear the trolls gaining behind them, guttural language and lewd growls growing louder and louder. They had to do something soon or they wouldn’t stand a chance of getting out of this alive.
Her shoulder wrenched in its socket as he pulled her backward. Bloody ice, but he was strong. He pulled her into a hole in the rock outcrop that led back into a cave whose entrance slanted in such a way that she hadn’t even seen it there.
She hoped the trolls would have the same problem.
The opening widened as it went, until they stood in a low chamber, wide and nearly circular. Jemal pulled her down with him and then put his hand over her mouth to make sure she kept silent. She was infuriated that he would dare to treat her like a common school girl.
At least, at first she was.
As the warmth of his hand seeped into her flesh she inhaled his scent and felt how he held her body to his, and she closed her eyes as feelings stirred within her. She was a grown woman, and should be past foolish things like love and lust. But here, in the dark, in his arms, she remembered again how she had loved him once.
A thunder of drumming feet ran across the stone roof above. Pinholes in the rocks let in enough light that she began to see her surroundings as her eyes adjusted. Fine silt filtered down as the Maker alone knew how many trolls went by them, down the hillside, and away. Silence returned slowly, and they were alone again.
Still he held her. His breathing was loud in her ears, the thud of his heart pulsing in his chest against her back. Her own heart began to race. This was intoxicating: The fighting, the running, the thrill of death and the feel of a man around her…
The heat inside her Maiden soul ignited.
To be continued....
The Kingdom of Rime was a place of ancient ice and hard-packed snow. This year had been particularly heavy in terms of snowfall. The Baluthier River, which usually withstood even the worst of winter’s harsh conditions to run free and rapid in its course south, now lay under a thick coating of ice. The fishing season had suffered because of it. The blue melon crop had fared better, but even that hardy fruit grown in its dark caverns below the ground had yielded less than expected. It had been a harsh and demanding winter.
