Er trank darauf am 1. November 1527, eine Tatsache, auf die sich mindestens ein Gelehrter beruft, wenn er argumentiert, dass die Thesen an Allerheiligen, nicht an Allerseelen angeschlagen wurden. Volz, Martin Luthers Thesenanschlag, S. 38f.; WB4, Nr. 1164, 1 Nov. 1527.
Iserloh, Luthers Thesenanschlag; ders., Luther zwischen Reform und Reformation. Anlässlich der Wiederentdeckung einer handschriftlichen Notiz von Luthers Sekretär Georg Rörer 2007 in den Randspalten der von Luther benutzten Bibel, die in der Universitätsbibliothek von Jena aufbewahrt wird, nahm Martin Treu die Debatte wieder auf. In der Notiz heißt es, Doktor Martin Luther habe am Vorabend der Feier von Allerheiligen Thesen zu Ablassbriefen an die Türen der Wittenberger Kirchen genagelt. Der Fund war bedeutsam, weil sonst die einzige zeitgenössische Erwähnung über das Annageln der Thesen von Melanchthon stammte; der hielt sich damals jedoch nicht in Wittenberg auf und konnte somit nicht Zeuge des Vorfalls gewesen sein. Eine ausgezeichnete Zusammenfassung dieser Debatte findet sich bei Ott / Treu (Hrsg.), Luthers Thesenanschlag.
Obgleich Rörers Notiz Melanchthons Behauptung bekräftigt, beweist sie noch nicht schlüssig, dass die Thesen angeschlagen wurden, denn auch er war nicht in Wittenberg und machte seine Notiz Jahre nach dem Ereignis. Dennoch haben wir guten Grund zu der Annahme, dass die Thesen in der Tat sowohl an die Kirchentüren angeschlagen als auch versandt wurden. Melanchthon erwähnt es nicht nur in seinem Vorwort zum zweiten Band von Luthers Werken, sondern beschreibt das Ereignis detailliert in einer Predigt, die er 1557 gehalten hat. In seiner 1565 veröffentlichten Biographie Martin Luthers schreibt auch Johannes Mathesius, die Thesen seien am 31. Oktober an der Schlosskirche ausgehängt worden, und er ergänzt, sie seien gedruckt gewesen: Mathesius, Historien, S. 28. In vielerlei Hinsicht ist die Debatte ein interessantes Beispiel zum radikalen Skeptizismus gegenüber Ereignissen, von denen wir fraglos annehmen, sie hätten stattgefunden.

Rhau-Grunenberg, bei dem Luther gewöhnlich drucken ließ, befand sich in Wittenberg um die Ecke, doch möglicherweise war die Werkstatt zu diesem Zeitpunkt in Schwierigkeiten und Luther auf eine andere Druckwerkstatt, vielleicht in Leipzig, ausgewichen. Zu den drei vorhandenen Druckfassungen aus Leipzig, Nürnberg und Basel siehe Volz, Martin Luthers Thesenanschlag. Bei einer hatte man sich verzählt und endete bei Nummer 87, die andere nummerierte lediglich in 25er-Schritten. Nur die Fassung aus Basel, ein Oktavheft, hat die Form einer Flugschrift und verwendet römische Ziffern zur Nummerierung der Thesen. Wenn diese überkommenen Fassungen die einzigen sind, die gedruckt wurden, ist es schwierig zu erklären, warum Luthers Text als die »95 Thesen« berühmt wurde.

Kein Geringerer als Lucien Febvre, der berühmte Vertreter der französischen Annales-Schule, verfasste eine Passage, in der er über das Unterfangen spottet: »Ein freudianischer Luther: Man ahnt schon im Voraus, wie er aussehen wird, und falls ein unerschrockener Luther-Forscher uns dieses Bild tatsächlich vor Augen führt, verspürt man keinerlei Neugier, es genauer kennenzulernen.« Febvre, Martin Luther, S. 46.

Eine interessante Ausnahme bildet das lutherische Nürnberg, über das es ein beträchtliches amerikanisches Schrifttum gibt.

Der Chronist Cyriakus Spangenberg lieferte eine detaillierte Beschreibung der Umgebung und hält darin fest, dass viele Felder rund um Mansfeld durch den Bergbau zerstört worden seien. Er erwähnte die großen Mengen Holz und Kohle, die in den Minen benötigt wurden: Spangenberg, Mansfeldische Chronica, Teil 4, Buch 1, S. 25 u. 27. Obwohl Luthers Biograph Johannes Mathesius Mansfeld und den Bergbau erwähnt und ein Schlusskapitel verfasst hat, das ursprünglich eine »Bergbau-Predigt« war, die Luthers Verbindungen zum Bergbau feierte (Mathesius, Historien), werden Mansfeld oder der Bergbau in Nikolaus Selneckers einflussreichen biographischen Schriften aus dem 17. Döhle, »Schwein, Geflügel und Fisch – bei Luthers zu Tisch«, in: Meller (Hrsg.), Luther in Mansfeld. Sechzig Prozent der in Luthers Haus gefundenen Knochen stammen vom Schwein, während nur zehn Prozent der Knochenfunde vom Rind kommen. Die ungewöhnliche Verteilung deutet laut Döhle darauf hin, dass die Familie sich darauf verlegte, zu essen, was gerade das Fleisch der Bessergestellten wurde, während in ärmeren Schichten vor allem Rindfleischprodukte verzehrt wurden. Die Familie könnte von Zeit zu Zeit Schweine gehalten haben. Ebenso fanden sich auch Knochen von Hausgans und Hausgeflügel, und etwa ein Drittel dieser Knochen stammt von Jungvögeln, was darauf hinweist, dass die Familie gutes, zartes Geflügel aß. Stephan, »Keramische Funde aus Luthers Elternhaus«, in: Meller (Hrsg.), Luther in Mansfeld. Die Tonwaren kamen hauptsächlich aus Eisleben, wo es mindestens eine große Töpferei gab, und sie datieren von etwa 1500. Die Scherbenfunde stammen von mindestens 200, vielleicht sogar mehr als 300 tönernen Gegenständen, eine Vielfalt von Küchengeräten inbegriffen. Es sind schlichte, spärlich dekorierte Objekte, die in Stil und Farbe noch nicht den Renaissance-Stil verkörpern. Doch ebenso wenig herrscht die für die Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts typische graue, irdene Ware vor, woraus man folgern kann, dass es sich um eine Familie handelte, die Neuware kaufte. 1517 wurden in den Bezirken Eisleben und Mansfeld zusammen mit Seeburg und Bornstedt 2196 Fässer Bier ausgeschenkt: Spangenberg, Mansfeldische Chronica, Buch 4, Teil 1, 409v. In den Hofbüchern schält sich ein Muster für die Auseinandersetzungen heraus, so schlitzten Mansfelder einander mit Messern auf, ein Mann zog die zwei Messer seiner Frau aus ihrem Futteral, um seinen Gegner auf den Pelz zu rücken, ein anderer griff zum Brotmesser, während der Bader versuchte, einen glücklosen Kunden mit seiner Schere zu erstechen: LHASA MD, Rep. Er betrieb zudem Schächte zusammen mit Wilhelm Reinicke; Freydanck, »Vater Luther der Hüttenmeister«, S. 67–70: Aus ihrer Partnerschaft ist uns ein Geschäftsbuch überliefert, das einen Zeitraum von etwa drei Monaten im Jahr 1519 abdeckt und das Freydank zusammenfassend referiert. Die Zahl von Luders »Feuern« schwankte. 1515 betrieb er 3 und ein halbes allein, aber zusätzlich 3 und ein halbes als Teilhaber, 1519 hatte er alle sieben ›Feuer‹. Diese wurden 1522 aufgeteilt, so dass er zwei mit seinem Schwiegersohn als Teilhaber betrieb und sein Sohn Jakuff die anderen, gleichfalls als Teilhaber, weiterführte. Vielleicht markierte das einen grundlegenderen Generationswechsel: Der Schreiber beginnt eine neue Seite, überschreibt diese mit der unüblich ausgeschmückten Jahreszahl 1523 und schreibt das Datum in Spiegelschrift (fol. 117r).

Das Gesamterbe belief sich auf 1250 fl, und es wurde in fünf Teile zwischen den überlebenden Kindern oder deren Nachkommen aufgeteilt. Die Teilung war rein formal, denn Jakob erhielt den Besitz und musste jeden der anderen Erben auszahlen. Damit dies finanziell möglich wurde, musste er zuerst einen Anspruchsberechtigten auszahlen und dann nach und nach die anderen, wobei Luther seinen Anteil als Letzter erhielt. In seinem Brief an Spalatin, in dem er die Behauptung empört zurückweist, seine Eltern seien Zigeuner, führt Luther 1520 in der Tat nur die Verwandten seiner Mutter in Eisenach auf, nicht die seines Vaters in Möhra. Er hat wahrscheinlich die große Sippe seines Vaters erst 1521 kennengelernt, als er ihnen nach dem Wormser Reichstag einen Besuch abstattete. WB1, Nr. 238, 10. Jan. 1520; Nr. 239, 14. Jan. 1520.
Einigen Berichten ist zu entnehmen, dass zwei von Hans und Margarethes Kindern bei einem Pestausbruch 1506 oder 1507 starben, und es ist denkbar, dass es ältere Zwillinge waren. Barbara, eine jüngere Schwester, starb 1520: Siggins, Martin Luther and his Mother, S. 14. In WT1, Nr. 1108 gibt Luther einen recht unklaren Hinweis. Nachdem er erklärt, seine Eltern seien mit einem Sohn nach Mansfeld gezogen, erwähnt er anschließend seine eigene Geburt. Luther wurde jedoch in Eisleben geboren, nicht in Mansfeld, es wäre also möglich, den Bericht als eine verdrehte Version zu lesen mit ihm als Kind, mit dem sie Eisleben verließen. Daraus auf das Vorhandensein eines älteren Bruders zu schließen ist nicht zwingend.

Angesichts der Tatsache, dass einige Metaphern unvermeidlich waren, da sie in der Bibel vorkommen, ist es erstaunlich, wie selten Luther Metaphern aus dem Bergbau benutzt. Bestimmt verstand er die Metaphern, die er gebrauchte. In seinen frühen Bibelübersetzungen bis Mitte 1520 gebrauchte er das Wort »durchfewern« (durchfeuern), während er später den Vokabeln »durchleutern« oder »leutern« (läutern) den Vorzug gab, vielleicht eine Wegbewegung von einer früheren Verwurzelung im technischen Fachwissen über den Verhüttungsprozess.
So erhielt Luther zum Beispiel 1529 Besuch von seinem Vater, seinem Bruder, der Frau seines Bruders und dem Mann seiner Schwester. Sein Bruder Jakob besuchte ihn kurz nach dem Tod seines Vaters in Coburg und, wie wir wissen, noch einmal 1538 und 1540. 1536 beklagte sich Luther darüber, dass ihm Jakob nicht geschrieben habe, was nahelegt, dass es sonst einen Briefwechsel zwischen ihnen gab, WB5, Nr. 1410, 19. April 1529, siehe auch Anm. 4; WB7, Nr. 2287, 19. Januar 1536. Als Luther im Sterben lag, wurden seine drei Söhne, die sich noch im Kindesalter befanden und ihn begleitet hatten, nach Mansfeld gebracht, wo Jakob sich um sie kümmerte, WB11, Nr. 4207, S. 300:16f.

WT5, Nr. 6424: Luther verriet die Geringschätzung seines sozialen Umfelds für sie mit einer zwanglosen Bemerkung in einem Gespräch über die mögliche Heirat einer weiblichen Verwandten: Wenn sich die Frau nicht betrage, wolle er sie nicht mit einem Akademiker verheiraten, sondern mit einem Bergmann, damit man keinen frommen gebildeten Mann mit ihr betrüge.

Ein Jahr darauf kaufte er das Haus bei der Silberhütte in Tal Mansfeld, fol. 126r, 1517; und nach dem Tod seines Vaters 1519 übernahm er das Haus der Familie in Tal Mansfeld, das zwischen dem Friedhof und dem Haus von Nickell Lebestock – 174r – lag; 1519 kaufte er ein anderes Anwesen in Eissberg und übernahm 1526 – 175v – eine Reihe von Liegenschaften, die zuvor Steffan Schmid gehört hatten. Er und Jakob Luder werden 1534 als Hüttenmeister aufgeführt: LHASA, MD, Rep. Kramm, Studien über die Oberschichten, Bd. 1, S. 36 beziffert die Einwohnerzahl im Jahr 1557 auf 748. 1635 ereignete sich in Eisenach eine verheerende Brandkatastrophe, weshalb über die frühere Stadtgeschichte wenig bekannt ist und man sich auf die Chronisten verlassen muss. Gemäß den Eisenacher Verordnungen waren ›große‹ Grundherren solche, die »zwo huffen Landes und Wiesen«, sechs Milchkühe und »vier Geldeviehe« besaßen – was darauf hinweist, dass die Landwirtschaft für die meisten Bewohner Eisenachs weiterhin große Bedeutung hatte. Anfang des 16. Jahrhunderts besaß die Hälfte der Stadtbewohner Gärten, Ackerland, Weinberge oder Hopfenfelder. 1466 warnte der städtische Notar Johannes Biermast, »wan das regiment wirt swach, die handwerkgsleute regiren«, was auf soziale und politische Spannungen hindeutet, Kramm, Studien über die Oberschichten, Bd. 1, S. 187, Bd. 2, S. 683 Anm. 4; Bd. 1, S. 253, von Strenge, Devrient, Die Stadtrechte, Nr. 34, S. 70f., Nr. 43, S. 85. Die Stadt listete Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts nur fünf große Händler auf – so viel wie Weimar, dessen Einwohnerzahl geringer war, Kramm, Studien über die Oberschichten, Bd. 1, S. 166, Bd. 2, S. 670, Anm. 112: Auf der Grundlage des Steuerregisters von 1542 wurde die Bevölkerung auf 3030 geschätzt. Siehe auch Gerd Bergmann, Kommunalbewegung und innerstädtische Kämpfe: Zeitgenossen waren sich des Niedergangs deutlich bewusst. Bis zur zweiten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts häuften sich die Klagen über die wirtschaftliche Stagnation, und bei einer Ratsuntersuchung 1509 wurden die Kritiken wiederholt. Sogar der Mädchenname der Mutter war eine Zeitlang nicht gesichert, da die ältere Literatur ihn in Verwechslung mit dem Namen ihres Großvaters als »Ziegler« angibt. Wolfgang Liebehenschel vertritt die Meinung, sie stamme aus dem 80 Kilometer von Eisenach entfernten Bad Neustadt und ihr Vater sei ein »Ziegler« gewesen, der eine Ziegelei besaß. Versprach der Betende jedoch eine Stiftung für das Kloster, wandte das Jesuskind ihm das Gesicht zu, und wenn jemand noch mehr Geld spendete, segnete es angeblich den Betenden: Topp, Historie der Stadt Eisenach, S. 15.

Sein Unbehagen gegenüber dem Betteln blieb lange bestehen: Luther erinnerte sich später daran, wie er, zurück in Mansfeld, an Karneval mit einem Schulkameraden um Wurst bettelte, wie es der Brauch war. Doch als ein Bürger sie neckte, suchten sie das Weite, und der Mann musste ihnen mit der Wurst hinterherrennen: WT1, Nr. 137. Luther gebraucht diese Geschichte als ein Gleichnis für die Beziehung des Gläubigen zu Gott und verbindet sie interessanterweise mit der Geschichte seiner Angst vor der Hostie, als Staupitz diese bei einer Prozession durch Eisleben trug. Er enthält drei Absätze mit maßlosen Beteuerungen seiner Zuneigung, bevor Luther zur Sache kommt, nämlich dass er nach Wittenberg gegangen sei. Weiter entschuldigt er sich dafür, ihn weder besucht noch ihm von seinem bevorstehenden Umzug erzählt zu haben. WB1, Nr. 5, 17. März 1509, S. 16:10f.; S. 17:38. Bekenntnisschriften der evangelisch-lutherischen Kirche, S. 378. Hilten sagte voraus, der Angriff auf das Papsttum werde 30 Jahre dauern – so konnten lutherische Hagiographen diese Aussage genau mit Luthers Tod im Jahre 1546 zusammenbringen. Auf diese Weise bekam Hilten seinen Platz als ein bedeutender Vorgänger Luthers, als ein Johannes der Täufer, der die Ankunft eines neuen Propheten verkündigte. Im 17. Jahrhundert ließ der lutherische Theologe und Superintendent von Eisenach Nikolaus Rebhan Hilten sogar in seiner Zelle ohne Sakrament sterben, da er sich geweigert habe, das Sakrament nur auf eine Weise zu empfangen, wie sie die Anhänger von Hus kannten, WB5, Nr. 1501, Beilage II, S. 195.
