Have you ever wondered if there’s more to life than you’re presently experiencing?
Becoming a Superhero: A Pocket Guide to a Life Like David is an easy read, yet full of profound and unique insights into the life of David. He faced many trials and tribulations throughout his life, as many of us do. Despite his own fears and shortcomings, God used David to silence the giant that locked down an entire nation in terror. By overcoming the personal lies of rejection and insignificance that could have easily held him back, David was prepared to deal with Goliath through the supernatural power of God within him. Just like David, God wants to help you overcome all that hinders you from discovering the superhero that lives in you.

INTRODUCTION
Despite the fact that I had an untraditional childhood—on the mission field in Peru, South America—as a young boy, I spent countless hours imagining that I had the supernatural strength and speed of many of the well-known superheroes of my day. Mighty Mouse and Under Dog were two of my favorite cartoons. I loved it when they would surprisingly defeat the oversized enemies they faced. Frequently I would find some random scrap of clothing or material that passed as a cape and wore it with pride—since all the superheroes I knew had one, I was convinced that with my cape on, there wasn’t anything I couldn’t do! My very favorite superhero was Superman, of course. Although, when my younger brother and I played together, Batman was a great second choice. I remember that Superman was always my preference because he could fly and seemed to have the greatest super powers.
As I grew up, I remained fascinated with super-heroes. Not only would I find myself daydreaming daily about being one, I even dreamed about it at night. Perhaps, like me, you’ve had dreams where you were able to fly and woke up terribly disappointed that you couldn’t in real life. Whether male or female, I believe we were all innately wired to want access to supernatural power in the midst of our mundane lives, if that desire hasn’t been repressed somewhere along the way.
Appropriately enough, even as a young boy, David became my favorite Bible character. The more I read the various stories of his life as a shepherd who killed the giant Goliath and as a king with his Mighty Men by his side who defeated the enemies of Israel—the more I realized he was quite a superhero himself. Because I thought David’s ability to use a sling must be the key to his super powers, I loved carrying around a slingshot myself.
As I continued to study David’s life, I learned that he was much more than an expert marksman. This guy could leap over walls effortlessly, run through entire army troops without being killed, and literally outrun and kill lions and bears with his bare hands when they went after his sheep. This simply fascinated me—and honestly, still does!
This fascination waned a bit through my later years, but even as a young man, I had an underlying desire that always bubbled just below the surface. I knew I was made to be a superhero and to use my God-given superpowers to rescue people and make the world a better place. When I would read about David’s Mighty Men and their amazing feats of strength and valor, I often wondered why we couldn’t do those things too.
Now, as a grown man, I find myself still drawn to David and the supernatural things of God. I’ve had the privilege of witnessing many, many miraculous signs and wonders and remarkable healing of all kinds. This led me to pursue a deeper understanding of David and how he, as an ordinary man, was able to shift into accessing this kind of spiritual inheritance. As I’ve studied his life, I’ve discovered new insights and secrets to the source of his supernatural abilities. These insights have been life changing for me, and I believe they will be for you, as well.
David wasn’t just a man who God randomly chose to bless with superhero capabilities. As we journey through aspects of David’s life, we’ll find a young man who most certainly grew up under tremendous rejection and insignificance. He was born as more of a survivor than an achiever, and yet somehow he was able to transition into becoming the historic giant-slaying hero that he’s known as today. I believe the life choices he made and the processes of God that he embraced show us how we too can step into the fullness of the supernatural inheritance that’s available for all of us. There’s a potential superhero longing to be released in every one of us. I believe the things that hold us back, are the same things that held David back. Therefore, the key of David’s breakthrough is the same key for us today—truly we can all shift from our normal civilian status into the Superman or Superwoman we were created to be.
The purpose of this pocket guide is to help you navigate through your own life battles into your victorious destiny of Becoming a Superhero. As we identify the processes David went through, you’ll awaken to the invitation of God’s heart for you to be all you were meant to be. You’ll discover the strategy and understanding of how to access the supernatural life you instinctively know you were meant to live. The truth is, creation all around you is waiting for you, much like Superman, to step into that phone booth, take off those ordinary clothes, and save the day! Why not you? Why not now?!
“For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons and daughters of God.”
Romans 8:19
At the end of each chapter, as well as here, you’ll find a code that you can scan with your smartphone, connecting you to a short online video where we’ll further discuss each topic presented. My wife, Elizabeth (my Superwoman), and I look forward to journeying with you!

ONE
DAVID WAS THE FIRST REAL SUPERMAN
“For by You I can run against a troop;
By my God I can leap over a wall.”
2 Samuel 22:30
If we’re going to become superheroes, it’s important we understand that David was the first real Superman. He wasn’t just a tough scrapper that things went well for. He wasn’t just a kid who got lucky with his sling. David had actually accessed real-life, supernatural strength. As the above verse informs us, he was a man who could run through a whole troop and was capable of leaping over a wall. This wasn’t just inspirational talk, but a literal reality for David. There were things in his life journey that he learned to overcome that allowed him to access a power of strength and speed that not even Samson had.
In becoming Superman, David went through quite a process. It seems clear to me that he wasn’t born a superhero; rather he connected to a plutonium-type inner strength by dealing with and overcoming the issues life presented him. The valuable reality for us is that the same supernatural life David discovered is available to us today. We too can access the kingdom of God that’s within us at a measure we never have before. It’s not just that God chose to make this one man, David, into Superman, but within each and every one of us is a David that’s waiting to be activated. We may not need the same supernatural physical strength that David obtained, as our modern day obstacles are different. Yet there’s another level of valor available to each of us. The goal of this book is that by the time you finish the last page, you’ll be able to say as David did:
“Through God (I) will do valiantly, for it is He who will tread down (my) enemies.”
Psalm 60:2
In order to accomplish this, it’s imperative that you become fully convinced that David became a real-life superhero. Let’s look at another passage that provides further proof:
“David said to Saul, ‘Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth and when it rose against me I caught it by its beard and struck and killed it. Your servant has killed both lion and bear and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.’”
1 Samuel 17:34-36
This, of course, is the famous preamble of David that set the stage before he easily took out Goliath. Evidently David actually ran down lions and bears whenever they came after his sheep, hitting and forcing them to let the lambs loose. David said that when the lion turned on him he grabbed it by its beard and killed it. Think through that process for a moment. David was no ordinary man. He could outrun a lion! He hit a lion with his bare hands so hard that it killed it. Scripture implies this happened more than once with both lions and bears. This ability is quite phenomenal, and is definitely high on my list of videos I want to see in heaven.
The David and Goliath story that I grew up with implied that the lion and the bear were the easier tests for David, which then prepared him for the greater challenge of Goliath. I contend that Goliath was immensely less intimidating for David than either the lion or the bear were. Even as we think through whether we would personally prefer to fight against a 10-foot tall man or a lion/bear with our bare hands, I think it’s clear to see that fighting the man would be preferable. A lion has a bite force of almost a half ton! To imagine David saving and extracting a lamb from that kind of grip and then grabbing the lion at it’s most powerful point and eliminating it is really some kind of amazing feat that no mere human is capable of.
