The first thing I'm going to talk about is signal flow. Signal flow start's from the time you hook up your mic to mixing board . Mic XLR- to line in to trim -to EG to post fad-er to dual fad-er is when you pull the fad-er down If the board is set per fad er you can have an effect on the channel and pull the fad-er down and still hear the effect in the head phones cause it separates the channel to level and so on.

There are many different mics as you most likely all ready no. hear are some of them Omnidirectional pic's up every thing in a 360 degree radius .an other one is directional everything in the front of the mic. Bi directional everything in the front and back super cardioid more picking up from side. Hyper cardioid even more from side.
