THE CONCEPT

We, at Cereal, have traveled to cities around the world and sought out places we believe to be unique, interesting, and enjoyable. Our aim is to produce guides that would befit Cereal readers and modern travelers alike, recommending a tightly edited selection of experiences that combine quality with meticulous design. If the food is top-notch, so too is the space that accompanies it. You’ll soon notice that our version of the perfect trip is woven in with an understated flair and a penchant for grand landscapes, both natural and constructed. Within these pages, you will find the practical advice you need on where to stay, where to eat, what to see, and where to shop.

THE GUIDE

This guide to New York City features a considered selection of shops, hotels, restaurants, cafés, and points of interest. Not intending to be comprehensive, we present a discerning edit of our favorite places to visit in the city.

All photographs, copy, and illustrations are original and exclusive to Cereal.

NEW YORK

Scott Fitzgerald found “wild promise of all the mystery and beauty in the world” here. Angela Carter believed “cities have sexes: London is a man, Paris is a woman, and New York is a well-adjusted transsexual.” Simone de Beauvoir confided “there is something in the New York air that makes sleep useless.” Words are never enough for this city, so often evoked that even a first visit entails almost constant déjà vu. This quintessential urban jungle delights us and tests us in equal measure. “In New York,” as Charles Bukowski reminded us, “you’ve got to have all the luck.”

PLACES TO VISIT

THE GREENWICH HOTEL

HOTEL
in TRIBECA

Close to the heart of Tribeca is the resplendent Greenwich Hotel, hewn in the classic New York style of wrought iron and redbrick. Swathed in rich velvet and accented with dark wood, its unique rooms sigh with timeless sophistication and charm. Outside, foliage cascades over the rolling arches of the tranquil courtyard. Perched atop the hotel is the wabi-inspired Tribeca penthouse, created by Axel Vervoordt and Tatsuro Miki, wreathed with a crown of winding wisteria.

PUBLIC

HOTEL
on the LOWER EAST SIDE

Designed by prizewinning architects Herzog & de Meuron, PUBLIC is Ian Schrager’s affordable redefinition of a luxury hotel. The mellow glow of plywood and smooth concrete distills a sense of ease and lagom—meaning “just enough” in Swedish. Beds are embraced by seemingly free-floating booths in smaller rooms, while larger suites allow the space to drink in the cityscape through floor-to-ceiling windows. Spend time in the eclectic store, the shapeshifting performance space, and especially the rooftop bar.
