A few years ago, someone in Oklahoma told me an old story that shows how beautiful and self-evident it is to live in harmony with oneself.
Two young fish swim down a river as an older fish swims past them in the opposite direction. He says, "Good morning, boys. What's the water like? "They smile at him and go on swimming.
After a while, one young fish turns to the other and asks him, "What is water?" For him, his natural element is so obvious that he does not even know he is in it.
Being in his own element feels so. If you do something that is so completely self-evident, with which you are so in harmony, you feel that you are doing exactly what you like.
How is it by you? Are you in your element? Do you know what your element is or how you can find it? There are so many people who lead their lives in their element and have the feeling that they are doing exactly what they are created for.
Many others do not do this - they have little joy in their lives, just stand by and long for the weekend.
The element combines natural endowment with individual passion. First of all, it means you do something for which you have a talent at home. Be it guitar or play basketball, cook, teach or deal with technology or animals.
People who are in their element can be, for example, teachers, designers, housewives, entertainers, physicians, firefighters, artists, social workers, accountants, clerks, librarians, foresters or soldiers. You can have all sorts of professions.
Recently, I talked to a woman in her sixties who has been an accountant all her life. As a child, she immediately understood numbers and was fascinated by mathematics. She just had it "on it". Knowing which skills you have and what that really means is an important step in finding your own element.
But being in his element means not only doing what one can do well. Many people can do things for which they are not interested. Being in his element also means loving what one does.
The bookkeeper agreed. She had not only talent in calculating, she also liked it. For them, bookkeeping meant no effort. That was exactly what she really liked.
As Confucius said, "Choose a profession that you love, and you do not need to work more in your life one day." Confucius did not know my element, even if it sounds like that.
This text is from the book "Begeistert leben: Die Kraft des Unentdeckten (2014) " from Sir Ken Robinson, published at EcoWin Verlag, and was left to us for reprint.
Research has long since discovered that it depends on ourselves how easily we feel helpless. It has something to do with the so-called "attributional style" - how we explain ourselves, what happens around and with us.
In the example from above one thinks: "I can never please anyone. I always do everything wrong and will probably get my problems with every boss and can not do many other things. "
While another says, "My boss is an idiot. He does not know what he wants. It will be different with another boss. And maybe in the future, I'll be able to ask more exactly what he really wants. "
The first person maintains a so-called stable, international, global attribution: she thinks the reason for the misfortune lies in her (internal), is permanent (stable) and general, therefore also works with other people and in other contexts (globally) ,
The second person, on the other hand, attributes unstable and external: She believes that the reasons are external (in the circumstances), that they are only temporary and could be quite different next time (unstable). One and the same event is interpreted differently by different people.
The second version is more healthy. Those who are stable, internal and globally attitudes, are more likely to slip into the learned helplessness - and into the depression.
For the learned helplessness is considered a common way to depression. And of course also in the inertia: No one is motivated, who feels helpless.
We can learn from this on both sides. If we want to motivate others, for example at work, in the family, at school or in the tennis club: then we should take care that the others do not get the impression "What I do, does not count anyway."
We do not want to do this by arbitrarily and unpredictably, today and tomorrow we want that, and we can not listen to anything or anyone.
On the other hand, we can of course also prevent the learned helplessness ourselves: Check your attribution style regularly.
