IJEOMA OLUO lebt in Seattle, Washington, und ist Autorin des New York Times-Bestsellers Schwarz sein in einer rassistischen Welt (2019). Ihre Artikel über race, Klasse und Intersektionalität erscheinen unter anderem in der New York Times und der Washington Post. 2018 erhielt sie den Feminist Humanist Award der American Humanist Association. Sie gilt als eine der einflussreichsten Afroamerikanerinnen unserer Zeit.
BENJAMIN MILDNER lebt als freier Übersetzer in Berlin und hat unter anderem William Gibson, Shaun Prescott und Thomas Oberender übersetzt.
Zur Vermeidung des im Deutschen kulturell und historisch problematischen Begriffs »Rasse« benutzen wir hier das englische »race« (klein und kursiv), da das Wort im Englischen einerseits historisch weniger belastet ist und andererseits aktuelle kulturelle Aspekte miteinbezieht. Eine deutsche Entsprechung gibt es (noch) nicht.
Zudem schreiben wir »Ethnizität« in Anführungszeichen, weil es zwar inhaltlich näher am englischen »ethnicity«, jedoch ebenfalls ein geschichtlich schwieriger und belasteter Begriff ist, den wir nicht ohne jede Markierung nutzen möchten. [Anm. d. Übers.]
Die Kategorie »weiß« ist zwar kulturell und soziologisch nicht das Gleiche wie das reine Adjektiv. Wir haben uns jedoch gegen eine (oftmals übliche) Kursivierung des Begriffs entschieden, da »weiß« einerseits i.d.R. nicht als Selbstbezeichnung fungiert und andererseits durch die häufige Benutzung in diesem Buch den Lesefluss übermäßig stören könnte. Wir schreiben »Schwarz« hier groß, wenn sich der Begriff auf race bezieht – also keine Hautfarbe im kolonialistisch-rassistischen Sinne gemeint ist, sondern eine kulturell und gesellschaftlich gewachsene Kategorie, die oftmals auch als Selbstbezeichnung fungiert. (So schreibt die Autorin von sich selbst auch, sie sei »Black«.) Ebenso verfahren wir mit dem Begriff »Braun«. [Anm. d. Übers.]
Der Begriff »woke« bezeichnet, teilweise scherzhaft, eine neu gewonnene Sensibilität gegenüber Themen wie Rassismus, Sexismus, Transfeindlichkeit, u.a. [Anm. d. Übers.]
Der Begriff »Jim-Crow-Gesetze« bezeichnet eine Reihe von Gesetzen, die ab 1877 die Segregation in den USA festlegten. Diese wurden erst durch den Civil Rights Act 1964 endgültig abgeschafft. »Jim Crow« war der Name einer mit rassistischen Stereotypen aufgeladenen Schwarzen Figur in vielen »Minstrel Shows«, d.h. Unterhaltungsshows, bei denen Schwarze gezielt karikiert und verhöhnt wurden. [Anm. d. Übers.]
»Respectability Politics« bezeichnet die Praxis von Menschen einer marginalisierten Gruppe, andere Angehörige dieser Gruppe für deren Verhalten zu rügen und die Verantwortungen für Ungerechtigkeiten gegen sie bei ihnen selbst zu suchen. Hier z.B.: die Thematisierung Schwarzer Kriminalität als Ursache für die Polizeigewalt gegen Schwarze. [Anm. d. Übers.]
Ein Begriff, der stark mit der Sklaverei und der Segregation in den USA zusammenhängt. Als »uppity« wurden jene Schwarzen bezeichnet, die sich nicht ihrer untergeordneten Stellung entsprechend verhielten, sondern vorlaut, frech waren, ihren weißen »Herren« die Stirn boten. [Anm. d. Übers.]
Roy Moore (*1947) ist ein evangelikaler und z.T. als rechtsextrem eingestufter republikanischer Aktivist und ehemaliger Kandidat für das Amt des Gouverneurs von Alabama. Kurz vor der Nachwahl zum US-Senat 2017 wurde ihm vorgeworfen, in der Vergangenheit mehrere Mädchen und Frauen sexuell missbraucht zu haben. Seine knappe Wahlniederlage wurde der hohen Wahlbeteiligung der Schwarzen Bevölkerung, insbesondere der Schwarzen Frauen zugeschrieben, die zu 97 Prozent seinen demokratischen Gegenkandidaten gewählt hatten.
