In den meisten ugandischen Familien gilt Folgendes: Bei der Geburt des ersten Kindes bekommt es seinen Namen von der Großmutter väterlicherseits; das zweite Kind bekommt seinen Namen vom Großvater väterlicherseits. Auf diese Weise geben die Ältesten der Familie ihren Namen an die jüngste Generation weiter. In vielen Gemeinden Ugandas befinden sich Totems, die ihre Identität repräsentieren. Wenn Leute aus meiner Herkunftsgemeinschaft, den Baganda, meinen Nachnamen Nakate hören, assoziieren sie mich mit unserem Totem, einer Kuh, in unserer Sprache Luganda ente oder akate. Die Bagande sind, wie andere derartige Gemeinschaften auch, in einzelne Klans aufgeteilt. Mein Klan ist der Njovu- oder Elefanten-Klan. Die Nachnamen meiner Geschwister stammen von jenem Klan, und sämtliche Namen stammen ausschließlich von der väterlichen Seite.

    Diese Analyse modelliert die Auswirkungen zunehmender Maßnahmen zur Familienplanung für den Zeitraum zwischen 2020 und 2050 auf die Emissionen aus den Sektoren Energieverbrauch, Bauwesen, Ernährung, Abfall und Transport unter Verwendung zwei verschiedener Szenarien: ein Szenario mit hoher Akzeptanz, bei dem verstärkt Maßnahmen zur Familienplanung getroffen werden, und einem Referenzszenario ohne zusätzliche Investitionen in dem Bereich Familienplanung. Auch der Bildungsstand beeinflusst die Fruchtbarkeitsdynamik und somit die Voraussagen zu künftigem Bevölkerungswachstum. Zu den Bildungsfaktoren, die das Bevölkerungswachstum am stärksten beeinflussen, zählen durchgängiger Zugang und gleichbleibende Qualität zu und von Bildung sowie Bildung auf dem Gebiet der sexuellen und reproduktiven Gesundheit.
